Frequently Asked Questions
Who can submit art? How do I submit?
Anyone! Email us at ArtistsForReparations@gmail.com and tell us a little about yourself and your work. If you already know what piece of art you would like to submit, or what organization you would like to support, tell us about those too.
How do the auctions work for me?
You decide whether you want to sell one piece by auction, or if you want to list items for sale through us and through a platform of your own as well, for example a flash sale in your shop in which all proceeds benefit your chosen charity. We’ll handle the transactions that go through one of our platforms, and connect you with any buyer(s) after they’ve won or purchased your work. You can choose whether you would like the money to go directly to your organization of choice, or if you would prefer the money go to you first, for instance in order to cover shipping costs or for tax purposes. We are also happy to help with any facilitation artists may need if you would like to sell through your gallery representation and have the profits donated.
What can I submit?
We encourage creativity in how you auction the work, whether it be a completed piece, a custom piece for the buyer, or multiples of an edition to more than one winner. For a better idea of what kinds of pieces have been auctioned and for what prices, check out our instagram. We are always happy to help workshop your ideas about what to sell.
What kind of organizations can I choose to donate my proceeds to?
You can choose any organization or project that has Black leadership and supports Black people. It is not required that the money be raised for a charity, it can be for a project or Black individual, nor is it a requirement that the project be art-related. If you are a Black identified artist, you are not required to donate the money at all. We are happy to help with recommendations.
How much should my piece cost? What happens if it doesn’t sell?
We recommend 50-75% of the estimated gallery or retail price. We are trying to encourage people to buy through us in order to donate. However, we do not wish to devalue your time, labor, or works in private collection, and do not want you to price your work below what you are comfortable selling it for. We are also now listing an ‘instant buy’ price, which is up to the estimated gallery price. Purchasing at that price triggers the end of the auction early. If your piece doesn’t sell, we can list it for sale at the gallery price on our website with your permission. If it does sell through the website, 100% of the proceeds will still go to the organization you chose.
